Farms approved to pick up waste food from Loaves and Fishes must adhere to the following:
1. Approved Farms may pick up farm food from the Loaves and Fishes warehouse, located at 210 Fry St, Nanaimo, from Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am-3pm only. No guarantees are made that the warehouse will be open or that waste food will be available. Closed all statutory Holidays. Loaves and Fishes reserves the right to restrict farmer’s access at any time.
2. Only 1 farm may access food at a time. Waste food is available on a first come first serve basis. If there is already a farmer getting food you will be asked to wait until that farmer has left before you can pick up.
3. No more than 3 representatives from any Farm may pick up at any time.
4. Farmers are asked not park any vehicles in front of the 2 loading bay doors. Parking is made available along the North side of the building, on Milton St.
5. Farmers must check in with a Loaves and Fishes staff member before accessing farm food. Farmers are asked to come up the front steps, into the volunteer waiting room/kitchen, and ring the doorbell to the warehouse to let a staff member know they are there to pick up food.
6. A staff member of the warehouse team will meet you at the designated farm (North side loading bay, closest to Milton St).
7. Bread and produce, if available, will be out on the loading bay. Farmers can tell a staff member anything additional they are looking for (meat, dairy, non perishables). The farmer can take as much as they want from what is available: • Produce – is usually available in bins or fish totes. The farmer will need to bring their own boxes, bins, containers, etc. to put the produce in. • Meat/dairy - Farmers must bring their own box, bin, containers, etc. to put meat/dairy items into. • Bread - Farmers must bring their own box, bin, containers, etc. to put bread items into.
8. Farmers agree to direct any questions to Loaves and Fishes staff only, not our volunteers.
9. Farmers must not charge or sell any waste food received from Loaves and Fishes.
10. Farmers must ensure no waste food is consumed by people. This is critical as we must maintain good relationships with our grocery stores partners.
11. The farmer takes sole responsibility for ensuring waste food is suitable for consumption by their animals. Loaves and Fishes bears no responsibility for any sickness, malnutrition or death that results from animals consuming waste food.
12. Farmers are responsible for disposing of any packaging associated with waste food they take.
13. Loaves and Fishes reserves the right to conduct a site visit (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) of your farm to ensure food provided is being used in compliance with this agreement.
